Case Study
Background
Dallas-based Pegasus Solutions Inc.
(Nasdaq: PEGS) is the critical technology backbone of the hotel industry, powering the majority of electronic hotel reservations around the world. Founded in 1989, Pegasus provides services to hotels and travel distributors, including more than 60,000 properties, 130 hotel brands, and the majority of the world’s travel agencies. Pegasus’ services include central reservation systems, electronic distribution services, commission processing and payment services, and marketing representation services. Pegasus has 18 offices in 13 countries, including regional hubs in London, Scottsdale and Singapore.
Business Need
Pegasus Solutions provides an electronic distribution system for hotel reservations. The company’s technology connects hotel reservation systems to the major global distribution systems for travel agents and Internet sites for consumers to book hotel reservations. The system enables travel agents and consumers to check room availability at hotels – the “looks” – and then book a room reservation.
Pegasus quickly realized that it needed a way to build out its shared infrastructure to support the ever increasing number of looks. Pegasus sought new technology that could offer greater levels of efficiency while allowing Pegasus to continue to grow its infrastructure.

The CentiCore Solution—
Impossibly Small. Amazingly Big. Surprisingly Affordable.
Unleash the power of your applications – the combination of multicore and open source is enabling smaller enterprises with the ability to leverage the choice and flexibility associated with each and drive competitive advantage. The Azul CentiCore integrated solution is first to combine the benefits of multicore and open source technologies, offering mid-market customers 100 CPU cores for $59,000.
The specially configured Azul 96-way Compute Appliance, which forms the basis for the CentiCore solution, is well-suited to address the needs of mid-market enterprises, where up until now, they have not been able to afford this class of processing power. This is the most cost-effective platform to increase development productivity and decrease both time to market and time to scale, all priorities for today’s developers.
Combining an Azul 960 Compute Appliance with JBoss open source software and Linux-based server boxes creates the ideal open-source development platform for cost-conscious smaller enterprises. Because the Azul solution is completely operating system agnostic, businesses can seamlessly tap into Azul compute pools regardless of existing infrastructure, while solving some of the most difficult challenges typically associated with today’s service-oriented applications:
- Enable massively scalable parallel applications
- Eliminate garbage collection pauses
- Reduce power consumption and environmental constraints
- Eradicate over-provisioning and minimize software licensing costs
- Reduce capacity planning from
months to days.
The Azul CentiCore Solution provides small to mid enterprises a simple and powerful way to scale their applications without the capital constraints normally associated with managing commodity servers that will set a new economic standard for data centers.
